AN ACT OF CHOICE – A Group Photography Exhibit
Statement
The strong sense of order conveyed by the photograph can be thought of as arising from a constructed view of the world. The artist, through both framing and choice of subject matter, is conveying a sense of the world as “stilled” and thus significant. This type of presentation again encourages viewers to concentrate and puzzle out the connections between various components. The image once more presents a self-contained world, one in which all elements are understood to work together to construct the inner integrity of the photograph.
Everyone today seems to carry their digital camera with them, but do they ask themselves the following questions? What does a photograph tell us about the world? Is the photograph merely descriptive, or can it make a larger statement about reality? How do photographers explore how the camera frames, and thus orders, reality? Can photographs of the land, the city, or other subject matter speak to universal themes and thus transcended the realm of ordinary, everyday reality? Is there an underlying order to existence, and if so can the artist capture it? Or does art merely give the illusion of order, and if so, can the pictorial elements that create this illusion become the subject matter of the work? These are questions that the photographers ask themselves as they shape their specific images in this challenging and exciting exhibition. Come to the bilton and explore this fascinating world of fine art photography!
